I have lived all my life in a quiet suburb of New York, between the bustle of the metropolis and green forests. New York, a city that never stops and is always full of movement. Quick decision-making, ambition and my aspirations helped me enter the financial sector and take a leadership position. For example, I have achieved the very American dream, which millions of people around the world dream of. But am I happy?
On the eve of my 55th birthday, I began to think, what would I really want?
My heart was drawn to warmth, to the ocean, to the evening, where time slows down, life filled with simple joys. I wanted to start my morning by walking along the beach with my wife and watching the sunsets right from the windows of my house. I would like not to worry about my career; I would like to change my home to a more comfortable place with a garden and palm trees.

But for me it was not just a dream of changing my place of residence. It was a dream of a new life, of the opportunity to gain a rich culture and history, to communicate with happy people for whom time passes more slowly and the smile never disappears from their face. And it became obvious that such a place is difficult to find in America. I then started looking at my options, looking at different countries in Europe with cold climates and welcoming cultures.
Portugal and Spain are two of the most attractive countries in Southern Europe, boasting rich natural beauty, natural beauty and many cultural attractions. However, when it comes to Portugal and Spain, for me, an American, the decision was not that difficult.
There are many wonderful places in modern countries where you can enjoy a warm climate, but Portugal is especially attractive for its hospitality and friendship with the locals. Here you do not pay any attention to language problems, since most Portuguese are fluent in English. In addition, Portugal has a large community of Americans and other expats.
One of our friends moved to this narrow country 5 years ago and spoke enthusiastically about life here. I think I have to thank them in part for helping me decide to take this step!
The key thing I was thinking about was the tax system. The tax system in Portugal significantly reduces the tax burden for foreign citizens and becomes an attractive incentive to move to Portugal. Thus, the choice of countries became justified. Here I found not only a warm climate and beautiful scenery, but also a home with friendly neighbors, where you feel safe, and where there is a large community ready to support and help in any situation.
